Suspect Flees After Robbing Bank, Leads Police on High-Speed Chase

Arrested Suspect Identified as 32-Year-Old Local Man

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (August 23, 2023) - A Kansas City bank robbery suspect was arrested Monday after a high-speed police chase that ended in a crash. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old James Smith, allegedly robbed a Bank of America branch at 11th and Main Street around 10:30 a.m.

According to police, Smith entered the bank wearing a mask and brandishing a gun. He demanded money from a teller and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash. Witnesses reported seeing Smith get into a silver sedan and drive away.

Police officers responding to the robbery spotted Smith's vehicle and attempted to pull him over. Smith refused to stop and led police on a chase that reached speeds of over 100 mph. The chase continued for several miles before Smith's vehicle crashed into a parked car at 43rd and Troost Avenue.

Smith was taken into custody at the scene. He was uninjured in the crash. Police recovered a weapon and a bag of money from Smith's vehicle.

Smith has been charged with first-degree robbery and resisting arrest. He is currently being held in the Jackson County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

The investigation into the robbery is ongoing. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Kansas City Police Department.
